A flooring estimate is where trust starts. It tells you what you are paying for, what happens to your home, and who is responsible for the result. A vague number over the phone does not tell you any of that.
Express Carpet and Hardwood has measured and installed floors for Anaheim homes and businesses since 1986. Here is what we think a good estimate should cover, and how we handle each part.
1. Someone should measure your actual space
A real estimate starts with a real measurement. Rooms are rarely perfectly square, and stairs, closets and doorways all change what a job takes.
We come out and measure so the project is planned correctly and you know what it requires before any installation begins.
2. The price should be in writing
Ask for the price on paper. A written number protects you and makes it easy to compare.
After we measure, you get a written price. We put a real number in writing, not a range.
3. It should cover material, prep and labor
The flooring itself is only part of the job. A useful estimate also accounts for:
- Material: the product you chose for each room.
- Prep: getting the subfloor ready before anything is laid over it.
- Labor: the installation, plus details like transitions, trim and cleanup.
Our written price covers material, prep and labor. Furniture, transitions, trim and cleanup are part of the plan.
4. Hardwood over a slab should start with a moisture test
Many Anaheim homes sit on concrete slabs. If you are putting hardwood over one, moisture matters.
Before we install hardwood over a slab, we test the slab for moisture and choose the right underlayment or adhesive for the result. If the slab is not a good candidate, we tell you before you order material.
5. You should get a schedule
How long the job takes depends on the material, the size of the space, the condition of the subfloor and details like stairs and custom trim. A good estimate comes with a schedule. We give you one once the project has been measured.
6. The installer should be licensed
In California, check that your flooring contractor holds a license with the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Express Carpet and Hardwood holds CSLB License #588691.
7. One team should own the result
When the company that sells the floor also installs it, there is no finger-pointing between a store and a separate crew. We handle both, so the floor you picked is the floor that gets installed.
Quick checklist for any flooring estimate
- Was the space measured in person?
- Is the price in writing?
- Does it cover material, prep and labor?
- For hardwood over concrete, is a moisture test included?
- Is there a schedule?
- Is the contractor CSLB licensed?
